What Is Green Screen (Greenbox) Shooting? Where Is It Used?
How does the green screen technique work, why the color green, and what makes a high-quality greenbox shoot?
Green screen, known in the industry as greenbox, is the technique of shooting in front of a solid-colored backdrop, then removing that backdrop on the computer and replacing it with any image you want. From weather forecasts to Hollywood films, the same principle applies: chroma keying.
Why green?
Blue and grey can also be used, but green is preferred because it is the color least present in the human body. This lets the software separate the person from the backdrop flawlessly. It is also why the person being filmed must not wear green-toned clothing.
Where is it used?
- Company training and distance-learning videos (with prompter support)
- Commercials and product presentations
- Music videos and YouTube content
- Political campaign videos
- Occupational health and safety training films
- Real-time virtual studios in live broadcast
The 4 requirements of a quality greenbox shoot
- Even lighting: every point of the backdrop must be lit equally, with no shadows cast.
- Depth: enough distance must be left between the subject and the screen; otherwise green spill occurs.
- Wardrobe and hair control: fine hair strands and shiny surfaces challenge the keying; they are checked before the shoot.
- An experienced edit: half of green screen work is the edit; edge clean-up and color matching take mastery.
